Ranking on Etsy proves to be one of the biggest hurdles for so many sellers, and rightfully so. It's so confusing if you don't pretty much have a scholarly degree in SEO.
So what is SEO anyway? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. This is just a fancy way of referring to whether your site is optimized to show up in search results or not.
This means that you need to be using the right keywords if you want to show up in a buyer's search and I'm going to show you the top ways on how to improve your Etsy SEO.
1. Imagine yourself as the buyer
Any and every time you click that "create new listing" button you want to visualize yourself as the buyer that you are trying to sell to. Think to yourself, "If I was searching for this item on Etsy what would I type into the search bar?"
For example, if I was looking for birthday invitations for my daughter's circus-themed 2nd birthday party I'd probably search using the words, "Circus themed birthday invitations". So, that's probably a great keyword phrase to use in your title and tags.
You get the idea, right?
That brings me to my next tip.
2. Be specific
There are these things called "Long-tail keywords" and you WANT to be using them. Long-tail keywords are keywords that are more specific and detailed. Going back to my example of my daughter's 2nd birthday party, I *could* use "birthday invite" as one of my keywords, but "circus-themed birthday invitations" is much more specific and will rank much higher because it's a long-tail keyword.
3. Check out what keywords your successful competitors are using
Take a look at the top 8 listings that pop up when you search for a product similar to yours. What keywords are they using in their title? Write down the most popular/duplicate ones you find to use for my next step.
4. Invest in a tag tool
To make things SUPER simple there are websites actually created just to help you with your Etsy tags and keywords. I personally use eRank, but Marmalead is another extremely popular tool amongst Etsy sellers. Whichever you decide on, you're going to take that list of keywords from tip #3 and punch them in one at a time into the tag tool of your choice. These websites will tell you how often they are searched for on Etsy and how often your competitors are using the same tag. You want to have a HIGH search number and a LOW competitor number. Any of the keywords that give you both of those factors are the ones you want to be using!
5. Be patient
I know that we all want instant gratification with our businesses, but you aren't going to get it here. Etsy SEO takes time to kick in when you adjust/change your tags. Once you add your SEO optimized titles and tags to your listings you should give it about a month before you see results for those tags and keywords, but it WILL work- especially if you used one of the tag tools mentioned above.
